Dr. An Gong

Dr. Gong gained a Masters degree in Developmental Psychology and Clinical Practice at Anna Freud Centre and University College London, and her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at University College London. She is registered with the UK Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and British Psychological Society (BPS). Dr Gong is currently also a researcher in the Department of Psychology at University of Hong Kong.
Dr. Gong has many years of experience within the field of children and adolescents’ mental health, helping them to manage difficulties including depression, anxiety, school stress, eating issues, family conflicts, interpersonal relationship issues, deliberate self-harm and suicidal ideations. She is specialised in working with adolescents and young adults (aged 8-25) with low self-esteem, transition difficulties, trauma and PTSD, poor emotional regulation and self-identity issues. Her key objective is to support young people to overcome and make sense the problems and struggles at this life-stage, and to prepare them for potential challenges in their adulthood. She has experiences working with school, families and social services.
Before moving to Hong Kong, Dr Gong has lived in New Zealand and UK. She worked in the general paediatric psychology team at University College London Hospital (UCLH) in the UK, with young clients of physical health difficulties (e.g. diabetes, chronic fatigue and pain, oncology) that are comorbid with mental health problems. In addition to working with young individuals, Dr Gong also worked with adults and older adults to cope with depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD, and social anxiety.
Dr. Gong offers therapy using evidence-based practices including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), narrative therapy, systemic and family therapy and psychodynamic principles. She also employs third wave techniques such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT).
Dr. Gong also has experience in providing psycho-educational assessments for children and adolescents with Attention-Deficit disorders (ADHD), Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and Learning difficulties. Subsequent to an assessment, Dr. Gong can provide guidance and support to families if referral is required. Dr Gong has received and passed the trainings of Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview Revised (ADI-R).

Dr Gong is able to practise in both English and Mandarin Putonghua.
