Dr. Sara Houshmand
Dr. Sara Houshmand is a clinical and counselling psychologist and a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario in Canada. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from McGill University, a program certified by the Canadian Psychological Association. With a specialization in student mental health, her aim is to support youth, young adults, and adults in navigating unique challenges and fostering resilience that lasts a lifetime. Most recently, she has provided psychological services at the University of Toronto, Western University, and the Concurrent Disorders Service at Parkwood Hospital in Canada. Her research has been published in the Journal of Counselling Psychology; the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education; Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology; and, the International Journal for Advancement in Counselling.
Her clinical interests are adjustment, bicultural, gender and sexual identity development; substance issues; emotion regulation, impulsivity and distress tolerance; disordered eating; depression, anxiety and perfectionism; career counselling; and, insomnia. Her theoretical approach includes Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. She is trained in clinical supervision, and is experienced in supervising Masters and Doctoral level trainees in clinical psychology.
Her assessment and intervention services are offered in English and Farsi. In her spare time, Dr. Houshmand is building fluency in French. She works with adolescents and adults. She welcomes the use of different forms of expression (such as writing, painting or poetry) to connect with thoughts and feelings in therapy.
