Psychiatry

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioural disorders.  A psychiatrist in Hong Kong is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health and who has been granted membership to the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists.  Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological concerns.
Central Health Partners Child Development Team have three psychiatrists, one of whom has a specialism in paediatrics and focuses on the early years.  Our psychiatrists all prescribe to the biopsychosocial model in that biological factors such as genetic and biochemical interactions; psychological factors such as mood, personality, and behaviour; and social factors such as culture and family are explored and taken into account during treatment planning. To do this, we conduct extensive and in-depth interviews and evaluations, often with the support of our team of psychologists.  If we feel that medication is a viable option, we conduct thorough medical and psychological assessments, and carefully monitor our clients as they begin and continue their medicine regime.  In some instances, we recommend genetic testing to identify the most effective medicine and dosage.  We take a conservative, safe, sensible, and age-appropriate approach whenever medicating a child or adolescent.
Our psychiatrists are also very experienced at working with families in a crisis situation, and can manage most serious mental health situations.  When appropriate, our psychiatrists support families in their home environments in addition to hospital visits.
